TIPS ON SAVING ON OFFICE MEALS
Â
Is eating out at lunch hour on the weekdays taking a huge portion of your meal expenses pie? Here’s how you can cut down expenses on meals so you can set aside some cash for other uses:Â
Â
Â
1) Bring your own lunch. It is not difficult to prepare a sandwich. Make it simple but tasty and nutritious. Have cheese and salad ready in the fridge and all you need to do is to add cold cuts or toss a meat burger in the microwave oven for your sandwich before you dash off to work. Other suggestions are fish fingers, tuna and pre-cooked and seasoned corned beef. Leftovers such as pasta, fried rice and noodles from the day before are great meals to take to your workplace.
Â
2) Invest in a mini fridge in your work area for keeping perishables like fruit, milk, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and cold meat if you want to keep your sandwich fresh for lunch.  All you need to bring will be your favourite bread.Â
Â
Â
3) Make your own coffee. Instead of buying coffee from the cafe or vending machine downstairs, why not set aside a bottle of freeze-dried coffee? It’s not only economical but also is better than having instant three-in-one coffee. A bottle of freeze-dried coffee lasts a month or so assuming that you stick to one cup a day. Keep fresh milk ready in the office fridge if you prefer white coffee. Alternatively, help yourself to coffee, tea or milo sachets and biscuits kept in the office pantry.
Â
4) Eat at your office canteen or food court. The food costs a fraction of the price you pay at restaurants and cafes. There is also more variety to choose from under one roof.
Â
5) Turn down lunch invitations politely. If you really feel ripped-off at restaurants each time you eat out, you need to put your foot down and keep ‘lunching out’ to a minimum.
Â
6) Have salad or entrée for lunch with colleagues. If you are compelled to lunch out but don’t feel like having a heavy meal, choose a salad dish or an entree like focaccia bread or soup. Ask for plain water instead of a glass of fizzy drink. It not only saves you some cash but also is healthy compared to sugar-laden fizzy drinks.
Â
7) Keep a hell mix nut, energy bar, soup packets or digestive biscuits in your office drawer. These snacks will keep you full between lunch and dinner so you will resist going to the canteen or food court to satisfy your hunger pangs.Â
Â
8 ) Eat light for lunch and have a filling home-made dinner. Canned tuna, corn kernels, soup sachets, multi-grain rolls are ideal lunch ideas that are not heavy but just enough to keep the tummy comfortable.
Â
9) Seminar lunches and afternoon tea are good opportunities for you to save on lunch. Sign up for and volunteer to attend relevant seminars that come your way!
Â
Cutting down on your lunch expenses is one way you can channel your savings on that area to use for more pressing needs. The important thing to note is to have a balanced meal consisting of carbohydrates, protein and vitamin such as cheese and salami in multi grain roll and an apple or a slice of rock melon.
